This interview in my previous report included a more recent analysis of the latest available data and conclusions of the UNHCR;
The data for 2010 was provided by the UNHCR and I analysed it to see the number of illegal immigrants living in the shelters for those deemed 'economic migrants'. I have chosen to go forward in the year 2011 after this analysis.
As the table shows, between 2006 and 2010, the number of legal and illegal immigrants living in the shelters Calais decreased from approximately 40000 to less than 3000:
There were approximately 3500 illegal immigrants living in the Eurodac tent shelters from 2006 to 2010. This is a decline of about 30% from the previous year.
Based on analysis I have undertaken, these tent shelters are also not working. In 2010, nearly half of the migrants using Eurodac tent shelters were never registered, although they did not enter Calais customs.
The UNHCR also found in 2010 report that many migrants were housed in containers that do not offer a number of important aspects warm and dry place to sleep. In particular, they did not have sufficient space for the storage or retrieval of clothes, the storage cooking utensils. According to the UNHCR in June 2005, tents should have a capacity of 50 persons and should have an area of 3.5m x 3.5m, while the containers must have an area of between 2 and 4m x 2.5m should have a capacity of 4 persons.
In May 2010, the first report on situation in Calais concluded that the EU's migration strategy has largely failed.
